Description

This easy and flavorful chicken burger recipe combines ground chicken with aromatic seasonings, herbs, and a hint of Dijon mustard, creating juicy and tender patties cooked to perfection on the stovetop. Served on toasted whole wheat buns with cheese and fresh toppings, it’s a healthy and delicious twist on a classic burger that’s perfect for a quick family meal or casual get-together.

Ingredients

Chicken Burger Patty

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • ¼ cup panko bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil (for cooking the burgers)

Burger Assembly

  • 4 whole wheat hamburger buns or buns of choice
  • Thinly sliced or grated cheese (optional)
  • Other toppings of choice: tomatoes, lettuce, avocado, mayo or nonfat Greek yogurt

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, add the ground chicken, panko bread crumbs, chopped parsley, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add and Mix Egg: Crack the egg into the bowl and break the yolk with a fork. Gently combine all ingredients using the fork or your hands, being careful not to overwork the meat to avoid tough burgers.
  3. Preheat Cooking Surface: Place a large cast iron, nonstick skillet, or grill pan on the stove over medium-high heat. Add the canola oil and allow it to heat thoroughly until shimmering.
  4. Shape Patties: Form the mixture into 4 patties approximately ½-inch thick and 4½ inches in diameter. Handle gently as the patties will be soft and slightly wet. It helps to shape them in the bowl, then lift them with your hands directly into the hot skillet to avoid breaking.
  5. Cook Patties: Place the patties in the hot skillet and cook for 4 minutes on the first side. Flip carefully and immediately add cheese on top if using. Continue cooking for another 4 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165ºF with an instant-read thermometer.
  6. Toast Buns: While the burgers cook, preheat your oven to 400°F and toast the hamburger buns cut-side up on a baking sheet for about 5 minutes until lightly browned.
  7. Assemble Burgers: Place each cooked patty on the bottom half of a toasted bun. Add your preferred toppings such as lettuce, tomato, avocado, and either mayo or nonfat Greek yogurt. Cover with the top bun and serve immediately for the best taste.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the burger mixture or the patties will become tough.
  • Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure the chicken burgers reach a safe internal temperature of 165ºF.
  • Soft patties are best handled gently and shaped directly into the skillet to avoid breaking.
  • Optionally, substitute nonfat Greek yogurt for mayo for a lighter, tangy flavor and healthier option.
  • Toasting buns enhances flavor and adds texture contrast to the burger.
