Perfect for a healthy, portable treat, the fruit leather preserves the bright flavors of peaches in a convenient snack form.
Ingredients
Fruit Leather Ingredients
- 3-4 cups Fresh Peaches (approximately 5 peaches)
- 2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup (White Sugar or Honey can be used as alternatives)
- 2 Teaspoons Lemon Juice (or lime juice)
Instructions
- Wash the Peaches: Thoroughly wash the peaches under running water to remove any dirt or impurities.
- Prepare the Peaches: Slice the peaches in half and carefully remove the pits.
- Blend Ingredients: In a blender or food processor, combine the peeled peaches, maple syrup, and lemon juice.
- Puree the Mixture: Blend until you achieve a very smooth puree consistency.
- Adjust Sweetness: Taste the puree and add additional maple syrup if you prefer it sweeter; blend again briefly if adding more sweetener.
- Prepare the Drying Surface: Line a baking sheet or dehydrator pans with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Spread the Puree: Spread the fruit puree evenly to about 1/4 inch thickness on the prepared surface.
- Dry in Oven (Option 1): Place the baking sheet on the lowest oven setting possible, ideally below 175°F (79°C).
- Rotate Pans: Rotate the pans after a couple of hours to ensure even drying.
- Cook Duration: Dry in the oven for approximately 6 hours, checking periodically.
- Check Dryness: The fruit leather is done when it is darker in color and no longer sticky, tacky, or wet to the touch.
- Continue Drying if Needed: If not fully dry, continue cooking, checking every hour until the desired texture is reached.
- Remove from Oven: Take the fruit leather out of the oven once fully dry.
- Spread Puree for Dehydrator (Option 2): Spread the fruit puree to the same 1/4 inch thickness on dehydrator trays lined with parchment paper or silicone mats.
- Set Dehydrator Temperature: Set dehydrator to 135°F (57°C), the optimal setting for fruit.
- Dehydrate Duration: Stack the trays and let the fruit leather dry for approximately 6 hours.
- Check Dehydrator Leather: After 6 hours, check if the fruit leather is fully dry, looking for it to be no longer sticky or wet.
- Continue Dehydration if Needed: If necessary, continue drying and check hourly until the leather reaches the right texture.
- Remove from Dehydrator: Remove fruit leather from dehydrator when fully dried and ready to store or enjoy.
Notes
- You can substitute maple syrup with white sugar or honey depending on your preference.
- Ensure the puree is spread evenly for uniform drying and better texture.
- If using an oven, keep the temperature as low as possible to avoid cooking rather than drying.
- Rotate trays occasionally in the oven to prevent uneven drying or burning.
- Fruit leather can be stored rolled up in parchment paper and kept in an airtight container for several weeks.
- Lemon juice helps preserve color and adds a slight tang to enhance flavor.
- Thickness of puree affects drying time; thinner layers dry faster but may be more fragile.
- If you don’t have a dehydrator, the oven method produces excellent results with patience.
