Ingredients
Meat and Aromatics
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
Seasonings
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp salt
- pepper, to taste
Liquid and Sauce
- 28 oz marinara sauce
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
Cheese
- 4 oz mozzarella, shredded or sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh Parmigiano Reggiano, grated
Other
- 24 oz potato gnocchi
- optional: fresh basil for garnish
Instructions
- Brown the Beef: In a large sauté pan over medium heat, cook 1 lb ground beef until browned and cooked through, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease to keep the dish from becoming oily.
- Sauté Aromatics and Spices: Add 1 tbsp olive oil to the pan with the cooked beef. Stir in the chopped onion, minced garlic, onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried parsley, salt, and pepper. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and fragrant.
- Add Sauce and Broth: Pour in 28 oz marinara sauce and 1/2 cup chicken broth. Stir well to combine all ingredients thoroughly in the pan.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let the sauce simmer gently for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Cook the Gnocchi: After the initial simmer, stir in 24 oz potato gnocchi. Cover the pan again and continue to simmer for an additional 10 minutes, until the gnocchi are cooked through and tender.
- Add Mozzarella: Stir in 4 oz shredded or sliced mozzarella cheese, letting it melt into the mixture for a creamy texture.
- Top with Parmigiano Reggiano: Sprinkle 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano over the dish to add a savory, nutty finish.
- Serve and Garnish: Remove from heat and serve immediately. Optionally, garnish with fresh basil for a burst of color and fresh herbal aroma.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian option.
- If you prefer, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth to make this dish halal or suitable for other dietary preferences.
- For extra cheesiness, add more mozzarella or a sprinkle of ricotta cheese just before serving.
- Fresh gnocchi cooks faster than frozen, so adjust simmer time accordingly.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
