Description

This Easy Keema Curry recipe is a flavorful and comforting ground beef curry cooked with fragrant spices, tomatoes, and peas. Ready in just 25 minutes, it’s perfect for a quick and satisfying meal served alongside boiled rice and naan or chapati.

Ingredients

Meat and Spices

  • 500 g (1.1 lb) minced beef (ground beef)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin

Cooking Fats and Aromatics

  • 2 tsp ghee (or neutral oil)
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp minced ginger

Spices and Flavorings

  • 1 tbsp tomato puree (tomato paste)
  • 2 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp ground coriander

Liquids and Vegetables

  • 400 g (14 oz) tinned chopped tomatoes
  • 200 ml (7 fl oz) water
  • 140 g (1 cup) frozen peas

Finishing Touches

  • 2 tbsp fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped
  • Boiled rice (to serve)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Pan: Heat a large frying pan over high heat to prepare for browning the mince.
  2. Brown the Minced Beef: Add the minced beef along with salt, black pepper, and ground cumin. Break up the meat and cook until fully browned, about 5 minutes, ensuring even cooking.
  3. Remove Mince: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked mince from the pan to a bowl, leaving the rendered fat and oil behind in the pan.
  4. Sauté Onion: Lower the heat to medium and add 1 tsp of ghee or oil. Add diced onion to the pan and cook for 4-5 minutes until it softens, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  5. Add Aromatics & Spices: Stir in minced garlic, minced ginger, tomato puree, curry powder, garam masala, and ground coriander. Fry for about one minute whilst stirring continuously until fragrant.
  6. Add Tomatoes and Simmer: Pour in the tinned chopped tomatoes and water into the pan. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  7. Reintroduce Minced Beef: Return the browned mince to the pan, stir well, and let it simmer for 5-6 minutes to meld flavors.
  8. Add Peas and Heat Through: Stir in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes until peas are heated properly.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle fresh chopped coriander over the curry and serve hot with boiled rice. Accompany with mango chutney and naan bread or chapati for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Use ghee for a richer, more authentic flavor, or neutral oil if preferred.
  • Curry powder can vary in spiciness and flavor; choose one that suits your taste or make your own blend.
  • For a milder curry, reduce the amount of curry powder or garam masala.
  • Frozen peas add a nice pop of color and sweetness, but you can substitute with fresh garden peas if available.
  • This recipe works well with ground lamb or chicken if preferred over beef.
  • Adjust salt to taste after cooking, especially if serving with salted accompaniments.
