Ingredients
Beef Patties
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef / beef mince
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 250 g (½ lb) mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1-2 tbsp soy sauce (optional)
Assembly
- 8 slices bread
- 2 cups grated cheese (Gruyère and sharp cheddar mix)
- Butter, for spreading on bread
Instructions
- Form the patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal balls and flatten each with the palm of your hand to roughly match the shape and size of your bread slices.
- Season the patties: Generously season both sides of the patties with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
- Cook the patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for 5-6 minutes per side until deeply golden and cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Prepare caramelized onions and mushrooms: In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking over medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft, silky, and caramelized. Optionally, add a splash of soy sauce during cooking to enhance the flavor. Adjust the heat if vegetables are browning too quickly.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Layer each slice of bread with a cooked beef patty, a generous spoonful of the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture, and a few slices of cheese, then place another slice of bread on top.
- Butter and cook the sandwiches: Butter the outsides of each sandwich. In a clean pan set over medium heat, cook the sandwiches until golden brown on both sides and the cheese is melted. Cover the pan with a lid to help melt the cheese faster.
- Serve: Once cooked, remove the patty melts from the pan. Slice them in half if desired and serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Using a mixture of Gruyère and sharp cheddar gives a rich, flavorful cheese melt.
- Caramelizing onions and mushrooms takes time but adds deep flavor; be patient and stir occasionally.
- If soy sauce is undesirable, simply omit—it is optional.
- Covering the pan during the final cook helps the cheese melt thoroughly without burning the bread.
- Use sturdy bread slices that hold up well to the juicy patty and toppings to avoid sogginess.
