Description

Deliciously crispy Air Fried Babybel Cheese bites, coated twice in crushed kettle potato chips for an extra crunchy exterior and perfectly melty interior. A quick and easy appetizer or snack ready in under 20 minutes, leveraging the air fryer for a healthier twist on fried cheese.

Ingredients

Cheese

  • 10-12 Babybel cheese rounds

Coating

  • 2 ounces Kettle Potato Chips (or Doritos, crushed into crumbs, about 1 cup)
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cheese: Remove the wrappers and wax coating from the Babybel cheese rounds. Set them aside to proceed with coating.
  2. Crush Potato Chips: Place the Kettle potato chips into a plastic bag and crush them into fine crumbs using a rolling pin or by hand. You should have at least 1 cup of crumbs.
  3. Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (204°C) for 5 minutes to ensure even cooking.
  4. Set Up Dipping Station: Arrange three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with the beaten egg, and one with the crushed potato chip crumbs.
  5. First Coating: Roll each Babybel cheese round first in the flour, then dip in the beaten egg, and finally roll in the potato chip crumbs to coat evenly.
  6. Second Coating: Dip the cheese rounds again in the egg mixture followed by a second roll in the potato chip crumbs. This double coating helps keep the cheese from melting out during air frying.
  7. Prepare for Air Frying: Lightly spritz both sides of the coated cheese rounds with nonstick cooking spray or olive oil spray. Place them carefully in the air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t touch or overlap. Work in batches if needed.
  8. Air Fry: Cook at 400°F for 3 to 4 minutes until the coating is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted inside.
  9. Serve: Using tongs or a small spatula, carefully remove the hot and melty cheese bites from the air fryer and serve immediately for best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Double coating is essential to prevent the cheese from leaking during cooking.
  • If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the coated cheese rounds at 400°F for 5 to 6 minutes, but air frying yields crispier results.
  • Be careful handling the melted cheese as it will be very hot inside.
  • You can substitute potato chips with other flavored chips like Doritos for a different taste.
  • Spraying the cheese before air frying helps achieve a golden crispy crust.
