Description
A quick and flavorful 10-minute honey garlic shrimp recipe where succulent shrimp are velveted in soy sauce and cornstarch, then sautéed with garlic, ginger, and a sweet-spicy honey glaze. Perfect as a main dish over rice or as a delicious appetizer.
Ingredients
Shrimp Marinade
- 450g / 1lb shrimp (peeled and deveined)
- 1 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
Cooking
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 3-4 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 tbsp ginger paste or grated ginger
- 4 tbsp honey
- 1/4 tsp chilli flakes (optional)
Garnish
- 2 green onions (sliced)
Instructions
- Marinate the Shrimp: In a medium bowl, combine the light soy sauce and cornstarch. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the bowl and toss thoroughly to ensure each shrimp is coated. Set this mixture aside. This velveting technique helps protect the shrimp during cooking, keeping them tender and juicy.
- Prepare the Aromatics and Cook Shrimp: Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger paste, cooking for no longer than 30 seconds to release their fragrance without burning. Next, add the marinated shrimp to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side depending on their size, until they turn pink and are opaque throughout.
- Add Honey and Seasoning: Pour in 4 tablespoons of honey and sprinkle the optional 1/4 teaspoon of chilli flakes into the pan. Toss the shrimp gently to coat them evenly with the honey mixture. Once coated, immediately remove from heat to avoid overcooking and to preserve the glaze’s shine and flavor.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sliced green onions over the shrimp for a fresh and colorful garnish. Serve the honey garlic shrimp over steamed rice for a complete meal or enjoy it as a flavorful starter.
Notes
- Adjust chilli flakes to your preferred spice level or omit for a milder dish.
- Use fresh ginger or ginger paste interchangeably depending on availability.
- Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
- This recipe is best cooked in a non-stick pan to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
- Honey can be substituted with maple syrup for a different sweetness profile.
