Crispy golden shrimp tossed in a creamy, sweet, and spicy chili sauce, this Japanese-inspired appetizer is bold, addictive, and ready in just 20 minutes — perfect for parties or a flavorful start to any meal.
Ingredients
- For the Sauce:
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ⅓ cup sweet chili sauce
- 2 tablespoons sriracha (or other chili sauce)
- 1 teaspoon honey
- For the Shrimp:
- 1 egg, whisked
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- ⅔ cup corn flour
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- ½ lb medium-sized shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 scallion, chopped (for garnish)
- Optional Add-Ons:
- Whole lettuce leaves (for serving)
- Extra finely chopped scallions (for garnish)
Instructions
- Make the Sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and honey until smooth. Set aside.
- Prepare the Shrimp: In a large bowl, whisk the egg and soy sauce together. In a separate plate or shallow bowl, mix corn flour and sea salt.
- Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. Add the shrimp to the egg mixture and toss to coat evenly.
- Dredge each shrimp in the corn flour mixture, ensuring a full coating.
- Fry the Shrimp: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry shrimp in batches for about 1 minute per side (2 minutes total), until golden and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- Remove shrimp and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Transfer fried shrimp to the prepared sauce and toss gently to coat.
- Serve: Arrange shrimp on whole lettuce leaves or small plates. Garnish with chopped scallions and serve with extra sauce on the side if desired.
Notes
- Use regular flour if corn flour is unavailable, though texture may differ.
- Adjust sriracha quantity to your preferred heat level.
- Serve immediately for the best texture and crispiness.
