Description

Crispy golden shrimp tossed in a creamy, sweet, and spicy chili sauce, this Japanese-inspired appetizer is bold, addictive, and ready in just 20 minutes — perfect for parties or a flavorful start to any meal.

Ingredients

  • For the Sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ⅓ cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha (or other chili sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • For the Shrimp:
  • 1 egg, whisked
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ⅔ cup corn flour
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ lb medium-sized shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 scallion, chopped (for garnish)
  • Optional Add-Ons:
  • Whole lettuce leaves (for serving)
  • Extra finely chopped scallions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the Sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and honey until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Shrimp: In a large bowl, whisk the egg and soy sauce together. In a separate plate or shallow bowl, mix corn flour and sea salt.
  3. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. Add the shrimp to the egg mixture and toss to coat evenly.
  4. Dredge each shrimp in the corn flour mixture, ensuring a full coating.
  5. Fry the Shrimp: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry shrimp in batches for about 1 minute per side (2 minutes total), until golden and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  6. Remove shrimp and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  7. Transfer fried shrimp to the prepared sauce and toss gently to coat.
  8. Serve: Arrange shrimp on whole lettuce leaves or small plates. Garnish with chopped scallions and serve with extra sauce on the side if desired.

Notes

  • Use regular flour if corn flour is unavailable, though texture may differ.
  • Adjust sriracha quantity to your preferred heat level.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and crispiness.
