Ingredients
Dough
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla paste
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Topping
- 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature while you prepare the dough.
- Mix Dough: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, shortening, and 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar until smooth and fluffy. Then add the eggs one at a time along with the vanilla paste, mixing well after each addition. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until fully combined, forming the dough.
- Prepare Baking Pan: Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking pan using butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking. Evenly press the dough into the bottom of the pan, smoothing it out into a uniform layer.
- Add Cinnamon Sugar Topping: In a small bowl, mix together 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the top of the pressed dough layer.
- Bake the Bars: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 22 to 26 minutes, being careful not to overbake. The edges should be lightly golden while the center remains soft.
- Cool and Serve: After baking, remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely in the pan. Once cooled, cut into 24 squares and serve.
Notes
- Do not overbake to keep the bars soft and chewy.
- Press the dough evenly in the pan for uniform baking.
- Vanilla paste can be substituted with vanilla extract if needed.
- For easier slicing, refrigerate the bars after cooling before cutting.
