Description

These red velvet crinkle cookies are soft, fudgy, and festive — perfect for holidays or special occasions. Made without eggs or dairy, they’re completely vegan and rolled in powdered sugar for a classic crinkle look.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup vegan butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 (3.9 oz) cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons red food coloring (adjust as needed)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • For the coating:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the vegan butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the applesauce, vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of red food coloring. Mix well. Add more food coloring if needed for a vibrant red color.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix. Set the dough aside.
  6. Place powdered sugar in a small deep bowl.
  7. Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop or spoon, scoop dough and roll into balls with your hands. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. One at a time, roll each dough ball in powdered sugar until heavily coated. Place them back on the baking tray gently to avoid knocking off the sugar coating.
  9. Bake for 10–12 minutes until the tops are crinkled and the cookies are set around the edges but still soft in the center.
  10. Let cool on the baking sheet placed over a wire rack. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Do not shake off excess powdered sugar — a heavy coat is key to the crinkle effect.
  • Cookies will continue to firm up slightly as they cool, but should remain soft inside.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
  • You can freeze the dough balls (uncoated) and roll in powdered sugar before baking.
