Description

Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake is a moist, spiced cake made from scratch and topped with a luscious cinnamon cream cheese frosting. It’s a comforting dessert or snack that brings cozy flavors with every bite.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray an 8×8-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until combined.
  3. In another large bowl, add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer until combined.
  4. Add in the applesauce, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the sugar mixture and beat just until mixed.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat on low speed until just combined. Fold in the chopped pecans.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 35–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from oven and let the cake cool completely before frosting.
  9. To make the frosting: In a bowl, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Beat until fluffy and well combined.
  10. Frost the cooled cake and serve.

  • For extra crunch, toast the pecans before folding them into the batter.
