Description
Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake is a moist, spiced cake made from scratch and topped with a luscious cinnamon cream cheese frosting. It’s a comforting dessert or snack that brings cozy flavors with every bite.
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
- 3/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray an 8×8-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves until combined.
- In another large bowl, add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer until combined.
- Add in the applesauce, vegetable oil, and vanilla to the sugar mixture and beat just until mixed.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat on low speed until just combined. Fold in the chopped pecans.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
- Bake for 35–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove from oven and let the cake cool completely before frosting.
- To make the frosting: In a bowl, beat together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Beat until fluffy and well combined.
- Frost the cooled cake and serve.
Notes
- For extra crunch, toast the pecans before folding them into the batter.
- This cake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Bring the cake to room temperature before serving for best texture and flavor.
