Description

Muhammara is a flavorful Syrian roasted red pepper and walnut dip known for its rich, smoky, and tangy profile. This easy-to-make dip combines roasted red peppers with walnuts, garlic, and pomegranate molasses to create a perfect appetizer or spread that pairs wonderfully with pita bread or fresh vegetables.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 Large roasted red peppers (jarred works fine)
  • ½ cup Walnuts
  • ⅓ cup Unseasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 Garlic cloves, peeled
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Pomegranate molasses
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Sumac
  • 1 tsp Aleppo chili flakes (see note)
  • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste

Garnish

  • Crushed walnuts
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Pomegranate molasses
  • Fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients to a food processor: Place the roasted red peppers, walnuts, unseasoned breadcrumbs, peeled garlic cloves, tomato paste, extra virgin olive oil, pomegranate molasses, lemon juice, sumac, Aleppo chili flakes, and a pinch of kosher salt and black pepper into a food processor.
  2. Process the mixture: Pulse the ingredients until achieving a fine consistency. Aim for a texture that retains some bite and is not completely pureed to keep the dip’s character.
  3. Taste and adjust seasoning: Sample the dip and add more salt, pepper, or lemon juice if necessary to suit your preference. Mix briefly to incorporate any additions.
  4. Serve and garnish: Transfer the Muhammara to a serving dish. Garnish with crushed walnuts, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a spoonful of pomegranate molasses, and fresh parsley. Serve alongside fresh pita bread or pita wedges for dipping.

Notes

  • For authentic flavor, try to use Aleppo chili flakes, which provide a mild heat and fruity flavor. If unavailable, substitute with mild chili flakes or paprika.
  • Jarred roasted red peppers are a convenient option and work well if fresh roasted peppers are not available.
  • This dip can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
  • The breadcrumbs help absorb moisture and add texture, but gluten-free breadcrumbs can be used if needed.
