Description

Delightfully soft and chewy matcha cookies infused with vibrant green tea powder and studded with luscious chocolate chips. These cookies offer a unique twist on a classic favorite, perfect for matcha lovers and chocolate enthusiasts alike.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups + 2 Tablespoons (276 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon (6 g) matcha powder, sifted
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda

Wet Ingredients

  • ¾ cup (157 g) butter, softened (regular or vegan)
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (100 g) light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla paste

Add-ins

  • ½ cup (100 g) semisweet or white chocolate chips or chopped chocolate

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Baking Sheets: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sifted matcha powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly combined. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugars: Using a standing mixer with a paddle attachment or a handheld mixer, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and light brown sugar together on medium speed for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Incorporate the egg and vanilla paste into the creamed mixture, mixing just until combined. Avoid over-mixing to maintain a tender crumb.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until a dough forms. Stir in the chocolate chips evenly.
  6. Scoop Dough: Using a medium cookie scoop or spoon, form dough balls roughly 1.5 to 2 tablespoons in size and place them spaced evenly on the prepared baking sheets.
  7. Bake Cookies: Bake one sheet at a time in the preheated oven for 8-11 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers still appear slightly under-baked. The cookies should not be golden brown.
  8. Cool: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool on it for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Enjoy: Serve and enjoy these chewy, flavorful matcha cookies with your favorite beverage!

Notes

  • Use all-purpose flour for best texture; cake flour can make cookies too soft and bread flour can make them too dense.
  • Pressing the dough balls slightly before baking is optional, but can help the cookies spread evenly.
  • For vegan version, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative and replace the egg with a flax or chia egg.
  • Do not over-bake; cookies should look slightly underdone in the center for a chewy texture.
  • Sift matcha powder to avoid clumps and ensure even flavor distribution.
