Perfect as a spread, dip, or snack, this recipe comes together quickly using a food processor and is ideal for those looking for a light, refreshing appetizer or condiment.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 cups chickpeas (cooked or canned, drained and rinsed)
- 1/4 cup tahini
- 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves
- 4-5 large ice cubes
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Gather all the ingredients and measure them out. Make sure your chickpeas are well drained if using canned.
- Add to Blender: Place chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, salt, garlic cloves, olive oil, and fresh basil leaves into the bowl of a food processor or high-powered blender.
- Blend the Mixture: Blend the ingredients together for about 4 to 5 minutes. Stop occasionally to scrape down the edges of the bowl to ensure even blending. The mixture should become smooth and creamy at this stage.
- Add Ice Cubes: Add the ice cubes one at a time, blending after each addition. This process will smooth out the hummus further and lighten its color as the tahini reacts with the cold. Continue until you reach the desired creamy consistency. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
- Season and Serve: Taste your hummus and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
Notes
- Using ice cubes helps achieve a smoother, lighter texture by cooling the tahini and preventing it from becoming grainy.
- Cooked chickpeas can be homemade or canned; if canned, rinse thoroughly to reduce sodium content.
- Fresh basil leaves add a fragrant, herbal note—substitute with spinach or parsley if basil is unavailable.
- Store hummus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
- This hummus can be served with pita chips, fresh vegetables, or as a sandwich spread.
