Description

A quick and flavorful Korean-inspired ground beef and rice bowl that combines savory, sweet, and spicy elements for an easy weeknight meal. Tender ground beef is seasoned with garlic, brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, and spices, served over steaming white or brown rice, and garnished with green onions and sesame seeds for a delicious and satisfying dish.

Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For Serving

  • 2 cups hot cooked white or brown rice
  • Sliced green onions, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the ground beef and garlic: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and minced garlic. Break the beef into small crumbles using a spatula and cook until no longer pink throughout, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the skillet to keep the dish from becoming greasy.
  2. Prepare and add the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, reduced-sodium soy sauce, sesame oil, ground ginger, crushed red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Pour this sauce mixture over the cooked ground beef in the skillet. Stir well to combine and let it simmer for 1 to 2 minutes to meld the flavors and slightly thicken the sauce.
  3. Serve the bowls: Spoon the hot ground beef mixture over hot cooked white or brown rice in individual bowls. Garnish each serving with sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for added crunch and flavor. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, increase the crushed red pepper flakes or add a drizzle of sriracha.
  • Use brown rice for a healthier, fiber-rich option.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for beef for a lighter dish.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
  • To make it gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos.
