Description
This Homemade Dill Pickle Popcorn recipe turns classic popcorn into a tangy, flavorful snack infused with dill, garlic, and a splash of dill pickle juice. Perfect for movie nights or anytime you crave a crunchy, savory treat with a zesty twist.
Ingredients
Seasoning Mix
- 2 teaspoons dried dill weed (or 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh dill)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon fine sea salt (more to taste)
- Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Popcorn
- 3 tablespoons oil of choice (refined coconut oil preferred)
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
Butter Mixture
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon dill pickle juice
Instructions
- Prepare Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine dried dill weed, garlic powder, fine sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Stir well and set aside.
- Heat Oil and Test Kernels: In a large heavy-bottomed stockpot or Dutch oven, add the oil along with three popcorn kernels. Heat over high heat with the pan covered. When these ‘test kernels’ pop, it indicates the oil is hot enough for popping.
- Melt Butter and Mix: While waiting for test kernels to pop, measure out the remaining 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl or stovetop—if microwaving, heat in 20-second intervals, stirring to avoid overheating. Once melted, add the dill pickle juice to the butter and set aside.
- Pop the Kernels: When the test kernels have popped, immediately add the measured 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels to the pot. Cover and remove pot from heat, swirling gently from side to side for 20 seconds. Return the pot to heat; kernels will begin popping shortly.
- Vent Steam: When the pot is about halfway full of popcorn or 30 seconds to 1 minute after popping starts, slightly crack the lid to release excess steam. This helps keep the popcorn crisp.
- Finish Popping: If necessary, gently shake the pot side to side to encourage remaining kernels to pop. Once popping slows significantly or stops, immediately transfer popcorn to a large serving bowl. Using a bowl with a lid or a large brown paper bag helps with tossing.
- Toss with Butter and Seasoning: Pour the melted butter and pickle juice mixture over the warm popcorn and toss thoroughly for even coating. Sprinkle the prepared seasoning mix over the popcorn, tossing again until evenly covered. Taste and add more salt if desired.
- Serve: Enjoy your homemade dill pickle popcorn immediately for the best flavor and crunch.
Notes
- You can use fresh dill if available for a brighter flavor, but dried dill works well too.
- Adjust salt seasoning to taste; the pickle juice adds some saltiness as well.
- Using refined coconut oil is preferred as it has a high smoke point and a neutral flavor.
- For even popping, use fresh, high-quality popcorn kernels.
- Make sure to release steam during popping to avoid soggy popcorn.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container to maintain freshness, but best enjoyed fresh.
