Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, plus about 1/4 cup extra for kneading
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup 0% Greek yogurt
- 1 egg, whisked (for brushing)
Toppings
- Everything but the bagel seasoning
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to get it ready for baking the bagels.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder, ensuring they are evenly mixed.
- Add Greek Yogurt: Add the Greek yogurt to the dry ingredients. Using your hands, mix the dough together. It will initially feel wet and sticky, but continue mixing until it forms a smoother dough. Add extra flour by the tablespoon as needed to reduce stickiness.
- Knead Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for a couple of minutes. If the dough feels sticky, sprinkle some flour on your hands and the dough as you knead.
- Shape Bagels: Divide the dough into 4 equal parts. Roll each piece into a long strand, then pinch the ends together firmly to form a classic bagel shape. Repeat this with each portion of dough.
- Prepare for Baking: Place the formed bagels onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Lightly brush each bagel with the whisked egg to help them brown nicely during baking. Sprinkle each with everything but the bagel seasoning for added flavor.
- Bake: Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for approximately 18-22 minutes or until the tops are nicely browned and cooked through.
- Cool: Remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool for about 10 minutes to set and make slicing easier.
- Serve: To serve, slice the bagels and toast them for 2 minutes to crisp up the inside, enhancing their texture and flavor.
- Storage: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days or freeze them for up to 2 months. To reheat, simply slice and toast them for a couple of minutes until warmed through.
Notes
- If the dough is too sticky, add extra flour gradually during mixing and kneading until manageable.
- Using 0% Greek yogurt keeps the bagels light and healthy but you can use full-fat Greek yogurt for a richer texture.
- Brushing with egg wash helps achieve a golden crust; you can substitute with milk or skip if vegan adaptations are desired.
- Everything but the bagel seasoning adds great flavor but feel free to customize with other toppings like sesame seeds or poppy seeds.
- To ensure even baking, make sure bagels are similar in size and thickness.
- Allow bagels to cool before slicing to prevent them from becoming gummy.
