Description

These Crispy Potato Balls are a delightful appetizer or side dish featuring tender mashed potatoes mixed with aromatic spices, rolled into bite-sized balls, and deep-fried to golden perfection. Served with a tangy sweet chilli mayo, they offer a crunchy exterior with a soft, flavorful interior—perfect for snacking or pairing with your favorite meals.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 3 tbsp corn starch
  • Parsley, minced, to taste
  • Parmesan cheese, grated, for topping

Spices

  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • Salt, to taste

Sweet Chilli Mayo (optional)

  • 1 part sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 part mayonnaise

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Boil the peeled and chopped potatoes in salted boiling water until they are fork tender. Drain and let them steam dry for a few minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. Mash and Mix: Transfer the drained potatoes to a bowl and mash thoroughly with a fork or potato ricer. Add corn starch, minced parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cumin powder, and salt. Mix thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
  3. Form Potato Balls: Using your hands, scoop about 2 tablespoons of the potato mixture and roll it into a smooth ball. Repeat this process until all the mixture is used up.
  4. Heat Oil: Heat a pot of neutral oil to 170°C (350°F), ensuring the temperature is steady for frying.
  5. Fry Potato Balls: Carefully drop the potato balls into the hot oil in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove the fried potato balls with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Immediately grate parmesan cheese over the top while still hot.
  7. Prepare Sweet Chilli Mayo: In a small bowl, mix equal parts sweet chilli sauce and mayonnaise to create a creamy, spicy dip. Serve alongside the potato balls.

Notes

  • You can customize the spices according to your preference or what you have on hand.
  • Ensure the oil temperature remains steady at 170°C (350°F) to get a crispy exterior without absorbing too much oil.
  • These potato balls are best served fresh and hot for maximum crispiness.
  • For a gluten-free version, confirm corn starch and mayonnaise are gluten-free brands.
