Description
This Coffee-Rubbed Steak recipe creates a smoky, charred crust and tender, juicy meat. A simple blend of ground coffee, spices, and brown sugar enhances the flavor while adding a rich depth to your favorite New York strip steaks.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon ground coffee
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 New York strip steaks, 1½ inches thick (8 ounces each)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine ground coffee, brown sugar, chili powder, black pepper, kosher salt, garlic powder, and dried oregano to make the rub.
- Place steaks on a work surface and generously coat them with the coffee spice rub.
- Cover the steaks lightly and let sit at room temperature for up to 30 minutes. Alternatively, refrigerate for up to 4 hours and bring to room temperature before cooking.
- Preheat a grill to high heat. Grill steaks for 5–6 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until internal temperature reaches 130°F.
- Remove steaks from grill and place on a cutting board. Tent with foil and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Slice steaks against the grain, pour any accumulated juices over the meat, and season with additional kosher salt and black pepper if desired.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
- For thicker or thinner steaks, adjust grilling time accordingly.
- Letting the steak rest after cooking ensures juices redistribute and meat remains tender.
- Use a cast iron skillet if a grill is unavailable; cook over high heat for similar results.
- The coffee rub can be made in advance and stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
