Description

Candied yams are a classic holiday side dish made with tender sweet potatoes baked in butter, brown sugar, and topped with gooey marshmallows. Sweet, rich, and comforting, this easy recipe is a Thanksgiving favorite that pairs perfectly with turkey, ham, and other festive dishes.

Ingredients

1 (29-ounce) can sweet potatoes, drained

1/4 cup butter, cut into pieces

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place drained sweet potatoes in a medium baking dish.
  3. Distribute butter pieces evenly over sweet potatoes.
  4. Sprinkle with brown sugar and top with miniature marshmallows.
  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until sweet potatoes are heated through and marshmallows are melted and golden.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use fresh sweet potatoes (boiled until tender) instead of canned for a fresher flavor.
  • Add ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or pumpkin pie spice for extra warmth.
  • Top with pecans or walnuts for a crunchy twist.
  • For a lighter version, skip the marshmallows and bake with just butter and sugar.
  • Assemble ahead of time without marshmallows, refrigerate, then bake with marshmallows before serving.
