Description

This Brown Sugar Frosting recipe creates a light and fluffy frosting whipped to perfection without using powdered sugar. Made with brown sugar, butter, and a creamy flour-milk mixture, it’s rich and smooth with a deep caramel flavor, perfect for topping cupcakes, cakes, and other desserts.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 7 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups brown sugar, packed
  • Pinch of salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups milk
  • 1 ½ tablespoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups salted butter, at cool room temperature

Instructions

  1. Make the flour-milk mixture: In a small saucepan, whisk together 7 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and 1 ¼ cups milk. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens to a thick paste consistency.
  2. Cool the mixture: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the thickened flour-milk mixture to cool completely to room temperature.
  3. Add vanilla: Stir in 1 ½ tablespoons of pure vanilla extract into the cooled milk mixture, mixing well to combine.
  4. Cream butter and sugar: While the flour mixture cools, place 1 ½ cups of salted butter, 1 ½ cups of packed brown sugar, and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl. Using a mixer, cream these ingredients together on medium-high speed for about 3 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  5. Combine mixtures: Add the completely cooled milk and flour mixture to the creamed butter and sugar. Beat on medium-high to high speed for about 5 minutes until the frosting is light, fluffy, and resembles whipped cream in texture. Continue beating if any sugar granules are still detectable, until fully smooth.

Notes

  • Ensure the flour-milk mixture is fully cooled before combining with butter to prevent melting the butter and losing texture.
  • Beat the final frosting long enough to dissolve the sugar granules for a smooth finish.
  • This frosting is ideal for cupcakes but can also be used to frost cakes and other desserts.
  • Use salted butter to balance sweetness; if using unsalted butter, add a pinch more salt to taste.
