Description
Bonfire toffee, also known as treacle toffee, is a traditional British treat made for Bonfire Night. Hard, brittle, and packed with the deep flavors of treacle, golden syrup, and brown sugar, it’s the perfect sweet to enjoy on crisp autumn evenings.
Ingredients
125 g butter
450 g soft brown sugar
60 g black treacle
60 g golden syrup
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (or other vinegar)
Instructions
- If using canned treacle or syrup, place the unopened can in a pan of simmering water for a few minutes to loosen.
- Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until sugar dissolves.
- Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Test readiness by dropping a little into cold water—if it hardens and turns brittle, it’s ready.
- Carefully pour into a greased tin. Cool completely until hard.
- Once cooled, turn out onto a chopping board and break into shards.
- Serve and enjoy, traditionally by a bonfire.
Notes
- Add 1 tsp ground ginger for warmth.
- Sprinkle sea salt before cooling for salted toffee.
- Use cider vinegar for a fruitier tang.
- Dip shards in melted chocolate for a twist.
- Crush and sprinkle over ice cream.
