Description
A vibrant and creamy black bean hummus that offers a smoky, spicy twist on the classic chickpea dip. Perfect as a healthy snack or appetizer, this hummus blends black beans, tahini, garlic, lime juice, and spices to create a flavorful, protein-packed spread with a hint of zest and heat from fire-roasted green chiles and chili powder.
Ingredients
Black Bean Hummus Ingredients
- 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 clove garlic
- 2 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons tahini
- Juice of 1/2 a lime
- 1/2 – 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 – 1 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 – 2 tablespoons (packed) chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 – 2 tablespoons fire roasted diced green chiles (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: Place the black beans, tahini, lime juice, olive oil, garlic clove, cumin, and chili powder into a food processor. Blend the ingredients until smooth, starting with the lower quantity of the cumin and chili powder to gauge flavor intensity.
- Adjust Consistency: If the mixture feels too thick or dry, add one to two tablespoons of water gradually until the desired creamy consistency is achieved.
- Mix in Fresh Ingredients: Stir in the chopped fresh cilantro and fire roasted diced green chiles if using. This adds fresh flavor and a smoky, mildly spicy touch to the hummus.
- Enhance Seasoning: Taste the hummus and add extra cumin and chili powder if a stronger spice flavor is desired.
- Season to Taste: Finally, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance all the flavors. Serve chilled or at room temperature with your favorite dippers.
Notes
- For a smoother texture, peel the skins off black beans before blending, if preferred.
- Fire roasted green chiles add smokiness and mild heat, but can be omitted for a milder version.
- Serve with pita chips, fresh vegetables, or use as a spread on sandwiches or wraps.
- This hummus keeps well refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
- Adjust the lime juice and olive oil quantities slightly to balance acidity and creaminess to your taste.
