Ingredients
Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- 1 tablespoon minced onion
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Sloppy Joes:
- 1 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 2 teaspoon cornstarch
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6 hamburger buns
- 6 slices American cheese
- Shredded lettuce (optional)
- Sliced pickles (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, minced onion, yellow mustard, white vinegar, sugar, paprika, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Refrigerate until needed to allow flavors to meld.
- Cook the ground beef and onions: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up as it cooks. When the beef is almost fully browned, add the diced onion and continue cooking until the onion softens and the beef is cooked through.
- Season the meat mixture: Stir in the yellow mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for about one minute to let the flavors combine.
- Thicken the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth and cornstarch until smooth. Add this mixture to the skillet and cook until the meat mixture thickens slightly. Taste and season with salt and pepper if needed.
- Toast the buns: Preheat the oven to broil. Place the hamburger buns cut side up on a baking sheet. Toast them under the broiler until they are golden brown. You may butter the buns beforehand if you like, but this is optional.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spread some of the prepared sauce on both the top and bottom of each toasted bun. Place a slice of American cheese on the top half of each bun and return to the oven briefly just until the cheese starts to melt.
- Add toppings and serve: On the bottom half of each bun, add sliced pickles if desired, then spoon on the sloppy Joe meat mixture. Top with shredded lettuce if you like, then place the cheese-covered bun half on top. Serve immediately and enjoy your Big Mac Sloppy Joes!
