Ingredients
BBQ Tofu
- 1 (14-ounce) block extra-firm tofu, pressed at least 30 minutes and cut into cubes or slabs
- BBQ Sauce, for brushing
- Cooking spray
Sandwich Assembly
- 4 brioche buns or regular hamburger buns
- Mayonnaise or vegan mayonnaise
- Cabbage Salad or Vegan Coleslaw
- Sliced avocado
- Dill pickles
Instructions
- Prepare the Tofu: Press the extra-firm tofu for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into cubes or slabs according to your preference for sandwiches.
- For Baked BBQ Tofu: Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the tofu pieces on a plate and brush all sides generously with BBQ sauce. Arrange the tofu in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake the Tofu: Bake the tofu for 20 minutes until edges begin to brown. Flip each piece, brush with additional BBQ sauce, and bake for another 5 minutes until well browned. Remove from oven and add extra BBQ sauce if desired for serving.
- For Grilled BBQ Tofu: Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat and oil the grates with cooking spray. Brush tofu pieces with BBQ sauce on all sides. If you cut tofu into cubes, thread them onto metal or soaked wooden skewers to prevent sticking and facilitate grilling.
- Grill the Tofu: Place the tofu directly on the grill or grill pan. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side, until tofu is well-charred and heated through. Brush with more BBQ sauce before removing from heat.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Lightly toast the brioche or hamburger buns if desired. Spread mayonnaise or vegan mayonnaise on the buns, add a generous layer of the BBQ tofu, then top with cabbage salad or vegan coleslaw, sliced avocado, and dill pickles.
- Serve: Close the sandwiches and serve immediately while the tofu is warm and flavorful.
