Description

A timeless classic, this Apple Pie brings together tender, spiced apples in a flaky crust—perfect for any occasion. Sweet and tart fruit baked to perfection with a golden, buttery crust makes it an irresistible dessert.

Ingredients

1 pie crust (homemade or store-bought, enough for top and bottom)

¼ cup butter

8 cups apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

⅔ cup brown sugar, lightly packed

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon lemon juice

¼ teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 teaspoon water

Coarse sugar (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. Stir in apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Cook 8–10 minutes until apples soften. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Roll out one disc of dough and fit into a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. Fill with cooled apple mixture. Roll out remaining dough and cover, or cut into strips for lattice. Trim and crimp edges.
  4. Whisk egg with water and brush over top crust. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  5. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes, then reduce to 350°F (175°C) and bake another 40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
  6. Cool before slicing to allow filling to set.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples for best results.
  • Add nuts or extra spices for variation.
  • Try a crumb topping for Dutch-style apple pie.
  • Add caramel for a caramel apple version.
  • Pre-bake crust slightly to prevent sogginess.
