Description
A timeless classic, this Apple Pie brings together tender, spiced apples in a flaky crust—perfect for any occasion. Sweet and tart fruit baked to perfection with a golden, buttery crust makes it an irresistible dessert.
Ingredients
1 pie crust (homemade or store-bought, enough for top and bottom)
¼ cup butter
8 cups apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
⅔ cup brown sugar, lightly packed
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon lemon juice
¼ teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon water
Coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. Stir in apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Cook 8–10 minutes until apples soften. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Roll out one disc of dough and fit into a 9-inch pie dish.
- Fill with cooled apple mixture. Roll out remaining dough and cover, or cut into strips for lattice. Trim and crimp edges.
- Whisk egg with water and brush over top crust. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
- Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes, then reduce to 350°F (175°C) and bake another 40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Cover with foil if browning too quickly.
- Cool before slicing to allow filling to set.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples for best results.
- Add nuts or extra spices for variation.
- Try a crumb topping for Dutch-style apple pie.
- Add caramel for a caramel apple version.
- Pre-bake crust slightly to prevent sogginess.
